Varicosity Prefers Women

Our veins are not designed for those overload, which we are creating them. Doctors noticed that varices prefers women, though men too are not immune from it. If your relatives through the female line had problems with veins, it is possible that they have inherited will pass to you. So after twenty regularly screen for phlebologists! Especially if your profession or lifestyle does “focus” on its feet. Varicosity can occur anywhere – in the esophagus, the spermatic cord in males (varicocele), rectum (hemorrhoids). But more often it affects the legs, usually “chooses” right.

The appearance of the evening pain in feet, lower leg edema, cramps in the calves complain about 15 percent of people aged 16 and older. This is the opinion of Phlebology – the first signs of trouble veins. The fact that the blood they are more viscous than in the arteries, and moves slowly. Perhaps that is why they get sick three times more often. Veins help to pump blood upwards valves, let it only in one direction. If the pressure in the veins consistently over their capabilities, they are expanding. In this case the walls lose their elasticity, there is swelling, the skin becomes dry and vulnerable. By the way, vascular stars, who until recently were considered harmless cosmetic flaw – a very alarming bell. They appear in every fourth woman and are enhanced intracutaneous flasks. If you do not pay attention to these “little things in life, in the veins may begin irreversible changes. Launched varices can develop into thrombophlebitis – inflammation of blood clots, which with the superficial veins can go into more depth, as well as varicose eczema and trophic ulcers (poorly healing wounds). So even if your feet are not decorated with blue-blue pattern, once a year should still check. The human eye can not see the beginning ailment, but the smart devices can.

Veinography (phlebography). Defines the state and the presence of deep vein thrombosis. However, the method has one big disadvantage: in order to make the veins visible on x-rays, they fill a special contrast solution, and it is quite unpleasant and even painful. Ultrasound. Display a special ultrasonic device allows the doctor to identify the symptoms of varicose veins in the early stages. The disadvantage is that the specialist is unable to consider the veins, hidden muscles. Lightreflexography. The doctor will ask you to perform certain physical exercises, but this time a special device with electrodes will record the data on the graph. For him and identify violations. Accuracy of diagnosis depends solely on medical professionalism. Remember that diseases of veins develop slowly. So, you have a chance to win. Especially in today’s world there are many methods and tools to help deal with a dangerous disease. Depending on the degree of neglect will be assigned a specific cure.

Vessel tonics

Vessel tonics, for example, with extracts of ginkgo biloba, horse chestnut, vitamin P (rutin), improve blood circulation in venous insufficiency.

By the way, with venous stasis phlebologists not advised to take generics with diuretic action. They only exacerbate the problem. First, the blood thickens, and secondly, if a vein is a blood clot, he can tear himself away from the wall and indulge in a “free floating”.

Aromatherapy

Each has its own therapeutic effect. Cupressaceae strengthens the walls of blood vessels, a beneficial effect on dry skin with varicose veins. A lime has antiseptic and tonic action. A few drops of these oils are advised to add daily to the Foot (not hot 37 ° C).

Compression Underwear

Elastic bandages, socks or stockings used to prevent varicose veins and the formation of blood clots after surgery, the cure of venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis. Spetsbele especially useful for pregnant women, but for long trips (bus, plane), it is simply irreplaceable. Unlike a regular jersey, the density of compression is not measured in denah “, and in the classroom. For example, if your varicose “propishut” tights second class.

Hirudotherapy

The principle of operation is similar to acupuncture, because the doctor put leeches exclusively in the field of biologically active points. Addition, their saliva has healing properties. Medical leeches are able to reduce blood clotting, which helps destroy blood clots, to remove puffiness.

Ozonotherapy

General procedures (eg, drip) and local (subcutaneous injection) strengthen the vascular wall and improves the rheological properties of blood, ie, reduce viscosity, increase the ability to deliver oxygen, and can simultaneously deal with complicated cases – eczema, trophic ulcers.

Laser

Using a laser for a few sessions, you can remove the vascular asterisk. True, not a fact that in advanced cases it after a while will not appear again.

Sclerotherapy

The doctor will remove from modified small surface vessels, entering into a vein in a special medicine. However, if the veins are strongly deformed, the procedure will not help.

Flebektomy

If the process has gone too far, will require surgery. Remove patient veins do not cause harm to the body. First, the vessel in which stagnant blood, no longer functioning. And secondly, varices, usually affects the superficial veins. As it proceeds, only 12 percent of the blood, the remaining 88 – “run” on the deep. As for scars do not worry. Modern techniques allow for the operation, making tiny incisions. The following article was published by a Pharmacynextdoor.com – Online Pharmacy Without Prescription.

Is Stress A Risk Factor In Heart Disease

Did you know that Stress and heart disease are related !
Stress increases the risk of heart disease …FACT !

Stress is a normal part of life however, if left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains, or irregular heart beat and ultimately the need for heart bypass surgery.

The mechanisms of exactly how stress increases the risk of heart disease are not yet fully understood. Stress itself might be a risk factor, or it could be that high levels of stress make other risk factors (such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure) worse. For example, if you are under stress, your blood pressure may go up, you may overeat, you may exercise less, and you may be more likely to smoke.

If stress itself is a risk factor for heart disease, it could be because chronic stress exposes your body to unhealthy, persistently elevated levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Studies also link stress to changes in the way blood forms clots, which can in turn increases the risk of heart attack.

Stress can be caused by a physical or emotional change, or a change in your environment that requires you to adjust or respond. Things that make you feel stressed are called “stressors.”

Stressors can be minor hassles, major lifestyle changes, or a combination of both. Being able to identify stressors in your life and releasing the tension they cause are the keys to managing stress.

These are some common stressors that can affect people at all stages of life:

• Illness – personal or a family member or friend.
• The death of your friend or a loved one.
• Problems in a personal relationship.
• Work overload.
• Starting a new job.
• Unemployment.
• Retirement.
• Pregnancy.
• Crowd situations.
• Relocation of home or work.
• Daily irritations.
• Legal problems.
• Financial concerns.

There Are the Warning Signs.

When you are exposed to long periods of stress, your body gives you warning signals that something is wrong.

These warning signs should not be ignored. They are telling you that you need to break the pattern.

If you continue to be stressed and you don’t give your body some relief from these tensions you are more likely to develop health problems which can include heart disease. You could also worsen any other existing illnesses.

Below are some common warning signs and symptoms of stress.

Physical signs mayinclude:

Dizziness – general aches and pains – grinding teeth – clenched jaws – headaches – indigestion – muscle tension – difficulty sleeping – racing heart – ringing in the ears – sweaty palms – constant tiredness or exhaustion – trembling unexplained weight gain or loss.

Mental signs may include:

Constant worrying – difficulty in making decisions – forgetfulness – inability to concentrate – lack of creativity – loss of sense of humor – poor memory.

Emotional signs may include:

Anger – anxiety – crying – depression – feeling powerless – frequent mood swings – irritability – loneliness – negative thinking – nervousness and sadness.

Behavioral signs may include:

Compulsive eating – excessively critical attitude towards others – explosive actions or reactions – increased use of alcohol or drugs – withdrawal from relationships or social situations.

Coping With Stress

If you have identified some causes of stress in your life, the next step is to learn some of the techniques that can help you cope. There are many techniques you can use to manage stress.

Some of these you can learn yourself, while other techniques may require the guidance of a trained therapist. If your stress level is severe, then it will usually be better to seek the help of a qualified health practitioner.

Some simple techniques for coping with stress include:
Eating and drinking sensibly at set regular times. Indulging or bingeing with alcohol and food may seem to reduce stress, but it actually adds to it.

Try to be more assertive. You do not have to meet others’ expectations or demands. It’s OK to say “NO!” Remember, being assertive allows you to stand up for your rights and beliefs but you must remember to respect those of others.

If possible, quit smoking. Aside from the obvious health risks of cigarettes, nicotine acts as a stimulant and increases stress levels.

Exercising regularly really does help. Choose non-competitive exercise and set reasonable goals. Aerobic exercise has been shown to release endorphins (natural substances that help you feel better and maintain a positive attitude.)

Take time to relax every day. Most stressed people find it difficult to find enough time to carry out all that they need to do, but this is just a stress related illusion.

Make the time and gradually you will find that you really did have time after all. Learn to control what you can and accept what you cannot.

Make sure you get enough rest. Even with proper diet and exercise, you can’t fight stress effectively without rest.

You need time to recover from exercise and stressful events. The time you spend resting should be long enough to relax your mind as well as your body.

Some people find that taking a nap in the middle of the day helps them reduce stress, but this may not be ideal for everyone.

By making small but positive changes, a little at a time, you will find that it is possible to reduce stress and improve your overall health.

Professional Massage – A Panacea For Many Diseases Of The Locomotor Apparatus

Professional massage – a panacea for many diseases of the locomotor apparatus. If you simply want to help close person relieve fatigue and stress, you should be able to perform a few simple steps and remember that massage – not boxing. The fact that non-professional needs to know in order to not to harm, masseur cosmetologist Jade Frissland said to the correspondent of “PharmacyNextDoor.com“.

- Before doing someone massage, does not prevent all the same to consult with your doctor, since some diseases, such as certain forms of degenerative disc disease, massage is absolutely contraindicated – the specialist.

If a person is tired and can not relax, you can massage his shoulders, gently pressing and rubbing their hands down. But this is superficial and not very effective procedure. It is better to do massage on all the rules.

Ask the person to lie on his stomach, relax, pull his hands along the body. You can put him under the brow ridge of the folded towels.

Do not massage the spine! But on both sides of it are parts of the body that are particularly susceptible to good massage.

Place on their knees to the left of “client” with his face to his head. Put your hands on his back. They must be sufficiently warm and dry, otherwise the effect will not be relaxing, but rather annoying.

First, follow the so-called diagonal stretch, putting his hands on his shoulder and lower back and gently diverting them in opposite directions. Then brush palm few special massage oil or cream, and start rubbing his back.

After a while, put your hands to the head with your fingers on both sides of the spine and start stroking the entire back – from the waist to the neck. Run it must be slowly, but exerting force. Movement should be possible synchronous.

When you get to the shoulders, dissolve the palm of hand and begin to gradually “go down” back to back, easily touching the sides. Repeat the procedure, slightly shifting the starting position of hands, until then, until the whole surface of the back will not promassirovana.

Now begin to alternate strokes with rubbing. Rubbing his back should be using the pads of thumbs. Initial position of hands should be slightly higher than when they stroke. Sticking his thumbs and pressed them tightly to the skin in the projection of muscles, located on the right and left of the spine, slowly and smoothly move the hand up toward the neck. Reaching our goal, dilute his hands in hand on the shoulders and touching his hands to the sides, bring them back to the starting position.

This procedure should be repeated 1-2 times. After that things must be slightly modified. First push in the muscle of the right thumb, and then move it to a few centimeters higher. Now do the same thing with the thumb of his left hand, placing it just above the right thumb.

Thus, smoothly and continuously walk around with your fingers along the entire length of the massaged muscles. Then, sliding his hands along sides, return them to the starting position.

Finally, transferring their bodyweight on the hands (they must be straight and elongated), gently “walk around” with his fists on the waist. Pre ask a man to, he said, if the sensations are unpleasant. Remember that the painful discomfort, and even more bruising should not be: massage – this is not boxing!

In conclusion, the session re-run the “stroking”: after a hard pressing force is especially nice.

- Massage not only relaxes the body and relieves nervous and stressful condition – assures Jade Frissland.

Recently, foreign media reported that children and adolescents suffering from various mental disorders are less excitable and more adequate perception of reality, if it daily for several minutes, rubbing her back. This is a relaxing effect on the nerve endings.

Another study showed that premature infants who have been doing regular massage, gained weight better than those who did not perform this procedure, despite the fact that they all receive the same amount of calories.

In addition, massage can prevent heart attacks and hypertensive crises. Enough to take a man by the wrist, so he slowed heart rate and decreased blood pressure.

How To Recognize The Pain Of Heart Attack

WARNING !

You may be experiencing the early warning signs of blocked arteries (atherosclerosis) but you may not be associating this pain and discomfort with heart problems.

Strange though it may sound, the traditional image of a man holding his chest whilst gasping for breath is not the most common pain experience or symptom of a blocked artery sufferer, although it may be that very one that ultimately brings them into the accident and emergency department.

It is very likely that the patient has been experiencing pain and discomfort for some time but has put this down to a myriad of other possible – and less serious – illnesses.

Take the example of my husband. He had angioplasty and a stent procedure some ten years earlier and therefore convinced us all that his chest pain was not a heart problem or angina. He claimed that he of all people would recognize heart pain.

He experienced something that he was convinced was more like indigestion for some eighteen months before he finally had a massive heart attack episode which was followed up with a heart bypass operation.

Typically he would be enjoying a rich meal, for example a Chinese Meal (one of his favourites) but no sooner would he have put his knife and fork down when he would be clutching directly below his chest with one arm and wincing with the pain, which would go off after a few minutes. This would be put down to indigestion, because of the rich food followed by pain.

Another common occurrence would be at the end of the evening just before bed when it was his self imposed job to finally load and switch on the dishwasher, which involves bending to close the door of the dishwasher, he would immediately get a pain in the chest again. This would be put down to a hiatus hernia because it came on after bending.

The pain – below the centre of his sternum – would also be apparent if he undertook anything that involved stooping or bending. So plenty of antacid remedies were taken and they would, strangely, ease the pain which often would disappear within a few minutes of taking this medication.

The pain would however, very often re occur during the night and he found it easier and more comfortable to sleep propped up by some pillows but would frequently complain in the morning of pain below the sternum during the night. He would frequently take antacid medication on several occasions throughout the night.

We got to the stage where we could no longer go for walks for the simple reason that after only a few steps, the pain would come on which would be immobilizing for him for several moments.

Now I can guess what you are thinking. If my husband experienced all these symptoms for so long why didn’t you get him looked at?

Well the answer is, we did. The accident and emergency department performed an ECG on a few occasions when we had rushed there after very severe pain, but unfortunately the ECG results did not indicate a heart attack and we were advised to “take things easy” and return if the pain re-occurred. They took a blood test on one other occasion and came back with the diagnosis of “irritable-bowl syndrome” which added to our reasoning and is one of the reasons why we always put his pains down to digestive problems, and is why he was sure it was not a heart related problem.

On the final occurrence of this type of chest pain, the pain just wouldn’t go away as it had in the past. All the antacids wouldn’t shift it and he spent most of the day clutching his stomach.

He eventually gave in when a second a violent pain started to develop in his right shoulder and he allowed me to call the ambulance at 10 pm. Prior to this he had insisted that it was another bout of indigestion and flatly refused to even consider attending the hospital.

By 5 am the next day he had been transferred from our local hospital to the main hospital and was in intensive care awaiting heart bypass surgery. He suffered several very unpleasant heart attack episodes whilst in hospital awaiting surgery.

So please heed this warning.

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, do not delay! Get to the hospital right away.

If the symptoms are not caused by a problem with your heart then this is great news and you can relax and get the appropriate treatment, but if it is your heart, and you won’t be reading this article unless you have a suspicion that it may be, then you will be in the right place to get treatment sooner rather than later!

My husband is now fully recovered and he is as fit as a fiddle. He can once again walk without pain in his chest and – deep joy – he can enjoy his favourite Chinese food without any suffering any pain afterwards!

Is A Heart Attack Knocking At Your Door

One of the most critical organs the body is the heart, how your heart behaves is influenced by the foods you eat. If you want that heart of yours pumping strong, it necessary that you eat a healthy diet. Heart healthy foods are readily available in the supermarket, use your personal likes as inspiration when brainstorming on food choices and this should help in the prevention of heart disease

Cholesterol is the most important thing when it comes to eating heart-healthy foods. The notion that there is good cholesterol in our body, may be hard to except but it’s true. These good cholesterols are called HDL, and heres what a good cholesterol does, it carries the bad cholesterols to the liver, the liver breaks it down then leaves the body. We actually don’t need the LDL cholesterol from the foods we eat. Our bodies make enough of this kind of cholesterol on its own. The LDL is what hurts the heart, and not the HDL cholesterol, which actually helps our hearts be decreasing the number of LDL cholesterol in the body.

LDL stands for low-density lipoproteins. It doesn’t flow through the blood stream very easy do to its low density. LDL begins to buildup on the walls of your arteries, especially in the arteries leading to your heart. This is bad for a number of reasons.

Gradually LDL begins building up on the walls of your arteries, it slows down the flow of blood running through your artery, because the opening inside of the arteries becomes smaller. That means your heart has to pump harder and faster in order to allow the same amount of blood to flow through your body. In time your hearts strength begins to diminish. So lets look at the worst case scenario, The build up within the artery stops the blood flow to your heart completely. When this happens, your heart decidedly panics because it is not getting the blood it needs and it starts beating rapidly to try to pump the blood. This causes a heart attack.

Another thing that can bring on a heart attack, is if the build-up in your arteries breaks off and floats down the blood stream. As it reaches the smaller part blood vessel, it will get stuck and block the blood, which again causes a heart attack. If the piece of plaque travels to the brain instead of the heart, it will cause a blockage in this area of the body, which in turn causes a stroke. Therefore, it is simply important to cut out of your diet the foods high in cholesterol so that you can prevent heart disease and other problems in the body.

Heart attacks and strokes are the number one killers in Men and Women in the U.S. Its estimated that an alarming 140 million Americans are potential candidates for heart disease or one out of every two people. Since we can’t feel high levels of cholesterol most of us find out about it after it’s to late.

Garlic For Hypertension Natural Cure

Hypertension is a silent killer. Mental and physical pressures raise psychological tensions that affect increases of adrenaline in the blood stream and cause the pressure of the blood to rise. Hypertension caused by narrowing of the small blood vessels, known as capillaries, throughout the body. This narrowing makes heart hard to pump blood through the blood vessels. Hence, the pressure of the heart is will rise along with the heart attempt to pump the blood through these vessels.

Blood pressure is measured with sphygmomanometer in millimeters of mercury. The highest pressure reached during each heart beat is called systolic pressure and the lowest between the two beats is known as diastolic pressure. The first gives the pressure of the contraction of the heart as it pushes the blood on its journey through the body and indicates the activity of the heart. The second represents the pressure present in the artery when the heart is relaxed and shows the condition of the blood vessels.

The blood pressure level considered normal is 120/70, but may go up to 140 /90 and still be normal. Within this range, the lower the reading, the better. Blood pressure between 140/90 and 160/95 is considered border line area. From 160/96 to 180/114, it is classed as moderate hypertension, while 180/115 and upward is considered severe.

Symptoms
The first symptoms are pain toward the back of the head and neck on waking in the morning, which soon disappears. Other symptoms includes dizziness, aches and pains in the arms, shoulder region, leg, back, etc., palpitations, pain in the heart region, frequent urination, nervous tension and fatigue, crossness, emotional upset, tiredness and wakefulness.

People with hypertension cannot do any serious work, feels tired and out of sorts all the time. He may experience difficulty in breathing and suffer from dyspepsia. Hypertension, if not eliminated, may cause heart attacks or strokes.

Causes
Main causes of hypertension are stress and unhealthy life style. Smoking and an excessive intake of intoxicants, tea, coffee, cola drinks, refined foods, are a few example of unhealthy life style. Hardening of the arteries, obesity, diabetes and severe constipation also lead to hypertension. Other causes of high blood pressure are excessive intake of pain killers, common table salt, food allergies and eating a high fat, low fiber diet, processed foods deficient in essential nutrients.

Natural Cures
Hypertension cure should starts with a well-balanced routine diet, exercise and rest. Diet is of primary importance. Meat and eggs should be avoided because it makes the blood pressure to rise more than any other food. Higher fruit content, fresh fruits, vegetables, lower protein and non-flesh diet are important to lowered blood pressure.

Vegetables are good for the hypertension. They should preferably be taken raw. If they are cooked, it should be ensured that their natural juices are not burnt in the process of cooking. Vegetables like cucumber, carrot, tomatoes, onion, radish, cabbage and spinach are best taken in their raw form. They may be cut into small pieces and sprinkled with a little salt and the juice of a lemon added to them so as to make them more palatable.

Garlic is regarded as one of the most effective hypertension natural remedies to lower blood pressure. Garlic has the power to ease the spasms of the small arteries. Garlic also slows the pulse and modifies the heart rhythm besides relieving the symptoms of dizziness, numbness, and shortness of breath and the formation of gas within the digestive tract.

The average dosage should be two to three garlic capsules a day to make a dent in the blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure In Adolescents

High blood pressure is a condition where the blood pressure is more than normal. It is also known as hypertension. Heart pumps out blood, so that oxygen can reach to different parts of the body via blood. The pressure with which heart pumps blood is known as blood pressure. The blood pressure comprises of two measures, the systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the larger figure and represents the pressure within the artery of the heart, when contractions take place which pump blood to different parts of the body. Diastolic pressure is the pressure within the artery of the heart, when the blood is filling in the heart and it is at rest. Both the pressures are measured in millimeters of mercury or mmHg. High blood pressure is abnormal increase in systolic pressure or diastole pressure.

Blood pressure is measured by putting a blood pressure cuff on the arm and placing a stethoscope on the chest. There can be very little variation in blood pressure depending upon the time, emotional moods, age, gender, weight, height, physical activity, stress and other illness such as heart disease and kidney disease. Children and adolescents become anxious when they visit the doctor. This is also an important factor which affects the blood pressure and the readings taken get tampered because of it. That is the reason why many blood pressure readings are taken in order to determine whether the adolescent has high blood pressure or not. The nurse may even ask the adolescent to calm down while taken the readings. Time gap is given between each reading, so as to give time to the adolescent to calm down. Emotions can also affect the blood pressure reading.

An infant will have a normal blood pressure reading of 80/45, where as an adolescent will have a normal blood pressure reading of 110/70. Therefore, age, gender, and height are important factor when determining the normal blood pressure level. Adults will have a higher blood pressure than the infants and teenagers. Also, boys have a higher blood pressure when compared to girls and tall people have a higher blood pressure than short people. An adolescent is said to have high blood pressure when the blood pressure is more than the blood pressure of ninety percent people of his/her age, gender and height.

There are many risks associated with hypertension or high blood pressure. The risk of developing coronary heart disease increases proportionally. The arteries will develop greater resistance towards the blood flow, because of which the heart will pump blood harder. Stroke is also another risk. Adolescents who have had high blood pressure as a child, develop harmful effects on the blood vessels and heart till the time they turn twenty.

The causes of high blood pressure can be classified as primary and secondary. If the causes are definite, they are primary and if the cause is linked to some illness, it is secondary. Primary causes are high blood cholesterol levels, smoking, stagnant lifestyle and overweight. Secondary causes are obesity, immobility due to chronic illness, prescription drugs, intense pain due to burns or cancer and illegal drugs. High blood pressure can develop due to hereditary reasons.

Hypertension is diagnosed by blood test and urinalysis. The kidney function will also be checked, along with blood cholesterol levels. Family history check is another important factor. Adolescents’ eating habits, exercise levels, activities in school and home will also be studied thoroughly. High blood pressure is dealt with by weight reduction, healthy diet, and increase in physical activity. If hypertension is due to illness, the illness is treated first. These treatment measures will decrease the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. It will also strengthen the heart and decrease the level of cholesterol in blood. This also helps to keep heart diseases at bay. The good thing is that only one percent of the adolescents, who have high blood pressure, need medication to bring back the blood pressure to normal.

Natural Treatments For Hypertension – 7 Good Steps To Reduce Hypertension Now

Hypertension, or high blood pressure as it’s often referred to, is one of the largest preventable medical obstacles facing folks today. It’s triggered by a combination of two issues. One, the blood vessels and arteries decrease their elasticity and harden. More stress is put on the flow of blood as it travels though blood vessels in the body. And two, the left side of the heart becomes thicker and become less efficient at pumping blood. This increases the risks of heart failure or a heart attack

Because it IS a preventable health problem, there are a few different types of methods used to treat it. In the event of moderate to severe high blood pressure, medical practitioners will usually prescribe one of the popular hypertension drugs.

Although many of these work for reducing hypertension they do have inherent risks and possible complications. These warnings are generally accepted as “necessary evils” to reducing hypertension and its various symptoms.

But, high blood pressure is a medical issue that can be reversed, by properly altering dietary and lifestyle habits, medicines can often be avoided.

So, here are some of the best simple natural remedies for high blood pressure:

Tarragon

Tarragon is a relative to the Sunflower family and there are two different breeds of Tarragon, Russian and French. However, when you go shopping and pick up some Tarragon for your pantry or a favorite recipe it is almost guaranteed that you have just selected the dried leaves of the Tarragon plant because that is what is most often used and sold for commercial purposes.

Tarragon has a somewhat bittersweet flavor to it, almost resembling anise with that hint of licorice flavor to it. Tarragon does not have a long history behind it like most of the other herbs as it was not brought into the Unites States until the 19th century. It does have some mention about being used in England much before that time though. Traditionally, Tarragon is used to flavor such things as vinegar, relishes, pickles, mustard, and other various sauces.

The word Tarragon is derived from the French word which means “little dragon.” There are two beliefs about how this nickname came about; one is because back in early times it was thought that Tarragon had the ability to cure venomous snake bites. Other thought it got this name because of the distinct roots that the Tarragon plant has that quite clearly resemble that of a serpent.

However, sometime as early as the 13th century Tarragon became widely used for seasoning vegetables, inducing sleep, and as a breath freshener. Not until the 16th century did Tarragon become more widely known. The Tarragon that is sold in the US today is not true Tarragon but rather Russian Tarragon which is not nearly the same. True Tarragon will be called French Tarragon and if you want to be sure that is what you are getting it is best to grow your own.

It is not recommended to use dried Tarragon because all of the active oils have been dried out. It is best to use fresh Tarragon which needs to be used rather sparingly because of its pungent taste. If you have grown the Tarragon yourself and have harvested it then put it in a Ziploc bag and stick it in the freezer. When it is time to use it there is no need to defrost it but remember that heat intensifies the flavor of Tarragon. If you have ever had Béarnaise Sauce, you should have recognized that Tarragon is the main ingredient in it.

Tarragon is used when preparing many sauces. In a pinch it has been said that a substitute could be chervil, a dash of fennel seed, or anise but the flavor will not be the same.

Many have claimed that Tarragon works well to induce appetite and the root of Tarragon was once used to cure toothaches. It is linked to medicinal uses for digestive aid and also for the prevention of heart disease. It can be used to induce menstruation and can be used as a sale substitute for people with high blood pressure. Further medicinal purposes include use for hyperactivity depression, and as an anti bacterial aid for cuts and abrasions.
